Welcome, students! My name is Ms. Summerville, and I teach 7th Grade Math (Periods 1-3) and 8th Grade Mathematics (Periods 4-6). I grew up in Ventura, California and moved out to LA County to attend California State University Polytechnic University. I majored in Civil Engineering and graduated in December 2011. After working in that field for a bit, I transitioned to pursuing teaching, and completed my credential in Foundational Level Mathematics at California State University Fullerton (Est. graduation date 2018). My Philosophy is this – math is truly a useful skill for all of your classes and for everyday life... and with practice and perseverance, YOU can succeed at math! I look forward to our time learning together this school year.
Please check back here on a weekly basis for class updates, assignments and important information.

About this Class
Below are the courses I teach and their descriptions, which are based on the CA Common Core Mathematics Standards for 7th and 8th grade, and I've included the link for those as well.

Mathematics - Grade 7: I teach 7th Grade Math during periods 1-3. This year, we will learn what proportional relationships are and learn how to apply the principles of proportions to real-life problems. We will learn how to use rational numbers in operations, expressions and linear equations. We will solve problems with scaled drawings and geometric constructions. We will also work with two and three dimensional shapes and solve for quantities such as area, surface area, and volumes. Lastly, we will start to build on our knowledge of data by looking at populations from samples. Students will learn by doing, working independently, and collaboratively on a variety of problem solving situations.

Mathematics – Grade 8: I teach 8th Grade Math during periods 4-6. This year, we will be expanding of our knowledge of expressions and equations which will include us learning how to graph biverate data using a linear equation, and solving for linear equations and systems of linear equations. In addition, we will learn what functions are and how to represent them in equation and graph form. We will also analyze two and three dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence. We will then learn and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will learn by doing, working independently, and collaboratively on a variety of problem solving situations.

About this Space
There are 3 main functions of this teacher site:
COMMUNICATION + COURSE INFORMATION
This website is one of the main ways that I communicate with my classes outside of the classroom. At this site, you will be able to check class announcements, assignments, find my contact information, read classroom rules and policies, and check the class calendar for important dates, such as when assignments are due or when we have a test. There are also internet safety rules and tools that you should familiarize yourself with.

RESOURCES
This site also should be used as a supplement to your learning experience in my class. I have provided useful links with study and project resources, and digital interactives to build your knowledge of math. The more you practice math, the better you’ll get!
