Digital Interactives
Explore the following Digital Interactive to build on your math skills! I’ve chosen some games relating, to rational numbers, sums and differences, geometric classification, and volume calculation. Lastly, I’ve included a less subtly math interactive, in which you can use your dancing skills while learning how to manage money. Enjoy!
1. Logical Leaps | Adding Rational Numbers on the Number Line
![Picture](/uploads/1/0/8/5/108548317/editor/logical-leaps.jpg?1499457076)
This interactive along with other interactive for middle school math topics is available through PBS Learning Media. This digital interactive helps you practice your addition of rational numbers to the number line. Help the jumping wallabies in their jumping contest through answering a series of riddles. You will choose a number line increment and then estimate best on the number line the length of each jump. Hint: Look at the denominator of your jump increments to best choose your number line increments. If you are working with 8ths, then it may be helpful to choose a number line displaying 8ths. Remember, the jump can be positive or negative, so you may jump backwards before going forwards. Don’t forget to add or subtract, based on your value on the number line!
2. Gizmos – Sums and Differences of Decimals
![Picture](/uploads/1/0/8/5/108548317/editor/gizmos-decimal.jpg?1499457016)
This interactive game helps you practice your knowledge of decimal addition and subtraction, by using area models to represent each decimal. Visually see what you are adding and subtracting by watching how each model changes when you change the input. You can practice with any combination of integers, tenths, or hundredths. Give this a try using a variety of combinations and see how problems you can create within the time limit. The initial timer gives you 5 minutes, but you can add to this time. You can also check on the box indicating you’d like to see the number line, and visually see how each item in the addition problem compares with each other and the total.
3. Gizmos – Classifying Quadrilaterals
![Picture](/uploads/1/0/8/5/108548317/editor/gizmos-quad.jpg?1499457086)
Here’s another interactive Gizmos game that you can play for free. This purpose of this game is to help you explore the various quadrilaterals in geometry. You will be learning about these shapes in middle school to help you familiarize yourself for high school math! To start this interactive, choose a quadrilateral from the list. For example, you may choose a parallelogram. Then choose the Condition you’d like to apply. For instance, you may choose that all sides are parallel, or that all angles are 90 degree angles AND the sides are parallel. See how this changes the shape! You can also use the degree measure and ruler functions to verify properties.
4.Thinkport | Building Sculptures
![Picture](/uploads/1/0/8/5/108548317/editor/thinkport-volume.jpg?1499456973)
This is a great interactive tool to help you build on your knowledge of volumes – specifically the volumes of prisms, spheres, cylinders, and spheres! Did you know that volume is dependent on area and the height of an object? If you can figure out the area of the base of an object and the object’s height, then you can calculate the volume, or how much space the geometric shape can hold. Click through the tutorial and then answer the questions. It may be helpful to have a spare sheet of notebook paper for your calculations. Hint: You will need to know how to calculate the area for a circle, and a rectangle. Do you remember this? If not, you can refresh your knowledge through this course.
5. Groove Nation
![Picture](/uploads/1/0/8/5/108548317/editor/groove-nation.jpg?1499456977)
This game sharpens your math skills while allowing you do it in a groovy style. Your job here is to help choreograph various clients dance performances for the Groove Nation Dance tryout, while helping them develop knowledge about managing their money. You will analyze evidence and use your decision making skills to figure out how to help your client manage their money, and ultimately help them stay within budget as they dance their way to through the competition! During this game, you will become acquainted with the terms income, expense, spending and savings and build your knowledge in these areas to help your dancer reach the dancing finals!
